Company Overview
ChemDirect is an online B2B marketplace for specialty chemicals designed to deliver significant time and cost savings for chemical buyers and sellers. With integrated logistics planning, credit terms, and real-time inventory shipped directly from vetted suppliers, ChemDirect makes buying chemicals drastically easier than existing channels.
Experience
I joined ChemDirect as the Head of Product and the third employee. As the company continued to grow, my responsibilities shifted to include defining the feature set of the marketplace, establishing product-market fit, driving feature adoption and retention, setting the product culture, and expanding our ecosystem of products.

When I joined ChemDirect, a V1 of the marketplace existed, but it was clear that the technical debt required a rebuild. Alongside the CTO, I led the total rebuild of the marketplace, which was completed in just 8 months. Using the limited quantitative data available from the V1 marketplace, I conducted industry research, user interviews, and UX research to establish the initial feature set.

Throughout the rebuild, I worked closely with our CTO to define our product, engineering, and design culture. We established a culture of rapid experimentation, user-centered design, and continuous evaluation of the feature set’s value. One of the biggest challenges we faced during the rebuild was shortening the usability curve for our addressable market, the vast majority of whom had never purchased chemicals via e-commerce in their career, but bought from Amazon and other B2C sites on a weekly basis. To address this challenge, I defined our product philosophy as "building B2B products with a B2C experience." This approach was rooted in the goal of making the buying process as intuitive and seamless as possible, while also delivering significant time and cost savings for our chemical buyers and sellers.

Our team delivered the marketplace on time and under budget in July of 2021. From that point on ChemDirect experienced hypergrowth. Within 18 months of joining, ChemDirect had seen 20x growth and raised a Series A led by Schneider Logistics (SNDR).

As ChemDirect continued to grow, I focused on managing a product roadmap that prioritized growing our core marketplace while strengthening our position as an all-in-one chemical commerce solution for our buyers and suppliers.

This led to the expansion of our product ecosystem to include ChemExchange (bulk chemical sourcing), ChemShip (multimodal chemical purposed logistics booking tool), and our AI-powered data enrichment process for supplier onboarding.

Throughout my time at ChemDirect, I launched several products from zero to one, while integrating them into a product ecosystem to strengthen our position within our supplier and buyer community. Additionally, I gained expertise in scaling and maintaining large catalog e-commerce experiences (ChemDirect currently has over 650K products) while growing a product and engineering organization that continues to build features to drive the value of the marketplace to our users.
